In questa lista, realizzata dai Ricercatori dell’Unità di Economia Sociale e Gestione della Sostenibilità di ARCO, si trovano le 100 principali fondazioni filantropiche del mondo. Il lavoro di ricerca mira ad evidenziare le 100 maggiori fondazioni per grandezza di capitale e si basa sui più aggiornati dati finanziari disponibili tra il 2016 e il 2026, per ogni fondazione sono inclusi il Paese di origine, l’anno di fondazione e il sito ufficiale. Come fonti per il valore del capitale si sono utilizzati, nella maggior parte dei casi, i bilanci di ciascuna fondazione.

Al primo posto l’olandese Stichting INGKA Foundation, nata per volontà di Ingvar Kamprad, fondatore di IKEA, che basa la sua opera filantropica sulla promozione e il supporto all’innovazione architettonica e del design d’interni e ha recentemente esteso i suoi programmi filantropici alla lotta contro la povertà nei paesi in via di sviluppo. Al secondo posto la Bill & Melinda Foundation, fondazione statunitense attiva nella ricerca medica, nella lotta all’AIDS e alla malaria, nel miglioramento delle condizioni di vita del terzo mondo e nell’educazione. Al terzo posto la Lilly Endowment, dedita allo sviluppo della comunità, all’educazione e al Cristianesimo. La maggioranza delle fondazioni sono statunitensi, a seguire le fondazioni europee e principalmente inglesi. Non si sono invece presi in considerazione i consorzi.
